Traditional Holiday Fare

People gathering at a ball (11745 bytes)And now, on to a subject that everyone loves--FOOD! But before we do, I'd like to extend to all of you an invitation to attend our Holiday Ball (link also below) which will take place on Dec. 23. We will have a full chamber orchestra, sing Christmas carols and feast on a menu that would delight even the most choosy of all food tastes.

And now on to our holiday foods.

Traditionally, roast beef is the choice of Victorians in northern England and goose in the southern part. Fairly few families are fortunate enough to own an oven. Lower-class households bring their goose to the local bakery to be cooked for a nominal fee. Middle-class families cook their own Christmas lunch or dinner and begin preparing the food as far ahead as they can in order to be ready for the big day.Decorated Gingerbread House (45396 bytes)

No Christmas lunch is complete without the goose, roast beef or turkey and, usually includes a soup, oyster patties, leg of mutton, port jelly, plum pudding, mince pies, nuts and fruit.

Here are some menus and recipes you may wish to try when you get back home. Before you continue on, however, my children and I would like to share with you, our gingerbread house. We just finished decorating it and are really pleased with the way it turned out. It wouldn't have been possible however, if it wasn't for the culinary skills of Mrs. Dobbs who made the gingerbread and the frosting for us.
