Trellian CodePad is a free text editor, similar to NotePad, but with many advanced features including syntax highlighting for all the major web based languages.  The program is as simple and functional, and an inexpensive tool that can be used by webmasters and site designers without changing their development style. However, one must know HTML and cascading style sheets to use it.

Its main features include:

I created a few paragraphs of text for my test.  As indicated, the coding is color-highlighted, however, what I found to be  a negative is that there is no "text wrap" function, so if you have a very long paragraph it continues on and on and on. I was also fascinated by the HTML wizard and code validation. In giving it a quick test, it appears that it is set to validate to W3C's HTML 4.0 Transitional standard.

While I could not find any "Help" file in the program on how to use the software itself, it does feature two help sections provided by WDG (Web Design Group) on HTML 4.0 and Cascading Style Sheets.

What also had impressed me initially, is that it has its own FTP client built-in.  Unfortunately it is set to reach only three directories on the C drive, Windows, which of course you don't want to touch, Temporary Internet Files and Program Files. In order to use it, you have to save your web page files to the Trellian folder.  I did test it's connection and it did get through AOL's FTP with no problems; but again, having to save your web page files to your Programs folder troubled me a bit

Its introductory screen indicates it has a 15-day trial period. However, registration is free.

Softpedia did a similar review on this software and states:  "Softpedia guarantees that Trellian CodePad 1.3 is 100% clean, which means it does not contain any form of malware, including but not limited to spyware, viruses, trojans and backdoors."

Trellian is workable on the Windows platform only.
